Validating the Benefit of New Software Technology

The software engineering research community has developed methodsfor showing that new development technologies are effective and the
corporate world investigates various techniques before applying them on
new developments. Unfortunately, these two communities do not often
work together to make technology transfer a smooth process. In this
paper, methods for validating research claims in the software
development domain are described and methods used by industry to
investigate new technologies are given. Guidelines that allow research
papers to address the needs for industrial investigations are proposed
that should greatly improve the transfer of new technology to industry.
