Elman Reappointed as Director of AMSC Graduate Program
Howard Elman, a professor of computer science with an appointment in the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies, was recently reappointed as director of the Applied Mathematics & Statistics and Scientific Computational (AMSC) program at the University of Maryland.
The interdisciplinary graduate program, currently ranked #13 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, draws on the numerous strengths the university has in applied mathematics.
There are currently 150 faculty affiliated with AMSC from 36 units on campus, including 18 from the Department of Computer Science.
An expert in scientific computing, Elman has been affiliated with AMSC for several decades. He has served as director of the program since 2018.
The AMSC program allows students to work on a wide range of topics, Elman says, including analysis of partial differential equations, computational fluid dynamics, mathematical finance, optimization, machine learning and data science, and biomathematics.
"I’ve also strived to be flexible and innovative," Elman adds, "as the program now incorporates new ideas such as quantum computing and statistical methods, while retaining and enhancing its strengths in classic topics in analysis and computational mathematics."
