Chetty Receives Google Research Award to Improve Online Safety for Kids

Marshini Chetty, an assistant professor in the iSchool with an appointment in UMIACS, has received a Google Research Award to improve online safety for kids.

“Keeping Kids Safe: Understanding Kids Mental Models Of Online Safety on Mobile Devices,” will study how kids, parents and teachers view online safety for smartphones and tablets. The researchers will use these insights to design and test new interface enhancements for the devices.

Marshini is collaborating on the project with Tamara Clegg, an assistant professor from the College of Education and the iSchool.

Google funded 151 projects this year under their Research Awards program, which covers tuition for a graduate student and provides both faculty and students the opportunity to work directly with Google researchers and engineers.
