De Floriani Named 2016 IEEE Fellow
A visiting professor in UMIACS who is an expert in geometric and topological modeling was just named a Fellow of the IEEE, the world’s largest professional association advancing innovation and technological excellence for the benefit of humanity.
Leila De Floriani was recognized by the IEEE for “significant contributions to geometric modeling and visualization.”
Being named an IEEE Fellow is a distinction reserved for select IEEE members whose extraordinary accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest are deemed fitting of this prestigious grade elevation. The total number of Fellows selected in any one year does not exceed one-tenth of one percent of the total voting Institute membership.
De Floriani’s research at UMIACS has focused on multi-resolution modeling, geometric algorithms and data structures for applications to scientific data visualization, solid modeling, geographic information systems and computer vision.
She is a professor of computer science at the University of Genova and founder of the Geometry and Graphics group at that university. She is also director of the doctorate program in computer science and systems engineering.
De Floriani has written almost 300 publications in the fields of computer graphics, visualization, geometric modeling, shape and image analysis, and geographic data processing, which have appeared in major international journals and conferences.
She is editor-in-chief of IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics (TVCG), considered the foremost scholarly journal in the field. De Floriani is a member of ACM, a Fellow of the International Association for Patten Recognition (IAPR), and a member of the Eurographics Association.
